Navigating the future: Key trends in Internal Communications for 2025 (according to Workshop)
The Workshop Internal Comms Trend Report 2025 is out now, and we’ve just finished scanning its glossy pages (and a packet of fancy biscuits) so we can share some of its key findings with you.
Workshop surveyed hundreds of internal comms professionals right across the globe for a “snapshot of the trends, insights, and challenges shaping the future of internal communications.”
It’s safe to say that in 2025, internal communications will be even more of a critical player in fostering alignment, trust, and engagement within organisations. As businesses evolve, so do the tools and strategies that drive effective communication.
Based on the insights from this global survey, here’s what looks set to be shaping the near-future of work-based internal communications.
1. Building Trust and Transparency
Clear, honest communication from leadership has become a top priority for internal comms teams. Employees crave authenticity, making transparency a key driver for fostering trust and alignment across all levels of the organisation. Strategies that emphasise open dialogue, coupled with actionable insights, are paving the way for deeper connections between employees and leadership.
2. The Power of Technology
Technology continues to redefine how organisations connect with their workforce:
- Email reigns supreme: Despite all technological advancements, email remains the backbone of IC strategies, with 84% of internal communicators claiming it as their most effective channel and 98% relying on it for its consistency and reliability.
- The intranet is also still essential: Over 77% of communicators say they rely on their intranet and, looking forward, 56% claimed it will be their top priority for next year. The report does advise, however, caution here. And we agree. The intranet should be just one part of an interconnected system and a carefully planned comms strategy. And it needs constant love, attention, care and updating.
- The rise of multimedia: Video content and digital events are becoming favourites, offering engaging, accessible ways to communicate across hybrid and remote teams.
To directly quote the report: “Video, especially, is an engaging, accessible format that resonates with both remote and hybrid teams, bringing messages to life in a way text alone can't.”
- AI’s potential: While still in the early stages of adoption (with communicators still trying to figure out how to use it!), AI tools are beginning to shape tailored communication strategies, saving time and enhancing relevance.
3. Reaching the Frontline
Deskless and frontline employees are often the hardest to reach, yet they’re pivotal to business success. Mobile-first solutions like SMS and apps are gaining traction, ensuring no team member is left out of critical updates. These channels are essential for organisations aiming to create an inclusive and informed workforce.
Digital signage is also highlighted as a way to reach those non-wired colleagues. Our advice? Just make sure the content is topline, brief, and -of course- visually engaging.
4. The Measurement Challenge
Quantitative metrics like email open rates and click-through rates are now leading the charge in measuring internal comms effectiveness. However, qualitative insights from pulse surveys and feedback loops remain crucial. The biggest hurdle? Ensuring comms teams have access to tools and resources to track impact and refine strategies.
Nearly half of the internal comms people surveyed admitted that they lack the tools they need to measure success effectively.
5. A Renewed Focus on Connection
As hybrid work models continue to dominate, IC teams are doubling down on fostering connection. In-person events, digital meetups, and platforms like Microsoft Teams are helping bridge the gap between remote and in-office employees. Personalisation is also playing a big role in tailoring messages to resonate with diverse teams.
Use of surveys is also increasing, as the importance of gathering feedback and giving employees a voice is recognised and embraced.
6. Budget and Resource Advocacy
Despite growing recognition of IC’s importance, many teams still face challenges around budget and tools. A promising trend? More organisations are planning to invest in modern communication technologies in 2025, signalling shift toward equipping internal comms teams with the resources they need to thrive.
7. What’s Next?
2025 is set to be a year of balancing innovation with efficiency. As internal comms teams refine their core channel mix, there’s a growing focus on strategies that prioritise engagement, inclusivity, and measurable outcomes. Whether it’s creating a "single source of truth" via a robust intranet or driving employee influence through peer-led initiatives, the goal is clear: build a cohesive, connected workplace.
Final Thoughts
Work-based internal communications is at an exciting crossroads, where technology meets human-centric strategies. By embracing these trends and navigating challenges with creativity and resilience, IC professionals can transform their role into a strategic powerhouse that drives organisational success.
